105 POUNDS ON 8-POUND TEST… AND 33 YEARS LATER, THE RECORD STILL STANDS. 🤯🎣

On April 20, 1993, Christian Martin was fishing off Key West with legendary Capt. Ralph Delph aboard the 25-foot SeaVee Vitamin Sea.

They were drifting a color change in about 200 feet when a giant Atlantic sailfish ate a flat-lined threadfin herring.

About 40 minutes later, Christian landed a 105 lb 4 oz sailfish on 8-POUND TEST.

It became the IGFA Men’s 8-lb Line Class World Record.

And nobody has beaten it since.

To me, this might be one of the hardest records in fishing to break.

Finding a legitimate 100-pound Atlantic sailfish is hard enough.

But the crazy part is this:

By the time most fishermen realize they’ve hooked a truly giant sailfish, they’ve already hooked it on 20, 30 or 50-pound tackle.

To intentionally beat this record, you’d almost have to spend YEARS fishing 8-pound test, waiting for that one freak fish to finally show up.

Finding the fish is hard.

Being ready with 8-pound test when it does?

Dang near impossible.

That’s what makes records like this so incredible.

This story is hilarious, but first, Capt. Ken Harris deserves a little context.

Ken went on to become one of Key West’s most accomplished light-tackle captains. His anglers set world records, he won major tournaments over decades, and he helped push light-tackle fishing to another level in that legendary Key West era.

But when this happened, Kenny was still new to Key West and just meeting Ralph Delph.

He jigged up a nice black grouper on 10-pound test and was pretty proud. He pulled alongside Ralph, held it up, and asked if it was a black or a gag.

Ralph said, “It’s a black.”

Kenny added, “Got him on 10-pound test.”

Bad move. 😂

Ralph told Jim Anson, “Pull that one out of the box and show him.”

Jim reaches down and pulls up what Kenny remembers as an almost 100-pound black grouper.

Kenny quietly puts his fish behind his back and says:

“Remind me never to show Ralph a fish again.” 😂

That moment turned into a lifelong friendship. Ralph became a mentor, and soon they were fishing together during one of the greatest eras of light-tackle sport fishing.

Ralph and his sons became especially known for giant black grouper, consistently finding them on wrecks, ledges, and deep water off the Dry Tortugas and west of Key West.

For most anglers, a 10-pound-test black grouper is a lifetime story.

Around Ralph, it was just the one you hid behind your back. 😂

Ken’s story made me laugh because I know that feeling all too well.

Years ago, my brothers Rob, Mike and I caught a 72.89-pound kingfish, at the time the biggest kingfish ever weighed in the history of the Southern Kingfish Association tournament series.

We couldn’t wait to call our dad and tell him.

His first words?

“You know I’ve caught bigger than that on 12-pound test.”

Then he laughed.

Only after that did we get the congratulations. 😳😂

That was Ralph.

The bar was always somewhere higher.

Fishing in his shadow wasn’t always easy, because those were some enormous shoes to fill. But looking back, I think that was one of the greatest gifts he gave us. He made all of us better. He made us set our sights higher, work harder, and believe that whatever we had just accomplished probably wasn’t the limit.

That’s why I relate so much to Capt. Ken Harris telling this story.

Ken caught a 63-pound kingfish on 12-pound test that broke the world record. Ralph read about it, laughed, and then went out and caught a 73-pounder on 12… followed by a 75-pounder.

As Ken put it:

“Don’t assume anything when it comes to Ralph Delph.”

That pretty much says it all.

For years, Capt. Ken Harris kept seeing the same name show up in the newspapers, MET standings and IGFA records coming out of Key West: Ralph Delph.

Ken remembers thinking, “Who is this guy?”

Then one day he finally saw him in person.

Ken was fishing a wreck in the Gulf when a 20-foot SeaCraft came over the horizon. Ralph pulled up wearing the bandanna that would become part of his trademark look. Ken had already read about him for years, but seeing him actually fish was something different.

Ralph put one blue runner in the water and watched the fish rise beneath it. Amberjacks, cobia, permit, everything was there. Ralph just kept looking until he finally pointed to one fish and told Jim Anson, “That’s your fish.”

One cast.

Fish on.

Then Ralph looked around and left.

Ken couldn’t believe it. The fishing was incredible. Why would anyone leave?

Because Ralph wasn’t just out there trying to catch fish. He was hunting the biggest fish, world records and tournament-winning fish.

Ken would later become one of several great Key West captains Ralph helped mentor, fish alongside and ultimately compete against. But on that first day, Ken knew exactly what he had just seen.

A Key West cowboy.

A gunslinger.

And in Ken’s words, “We weren’t on his level yet.”

“And that’s the first time I saw Ralph Delph.”

Before Yamaha, there was Mariner.

For the past three decades, the Delph name has been closely tied to Yamaha Outboards, and Ralph finished his career as a Yamaha man. But this old Mariner ad shows a very different chapter—and a very different era of offshore fishing.

“My Mariner will probably run more miles this year than your car. And I’ll bet it needs less maintenance.”

And Ralph was actually doing it.

He was running 75–150 mile offshore trips and fishing in weather most wouldn’t even consider.

What makes this even better is that there wasn’t really a “photo shoot.” Ralph was booked almost every day except Sundays, so Mariner just came along and shot him while he was already doing what he always did—running offshore, fishing, working.

Nothing staged. No dock shots. Just real time on the water.

Even the extra photos in this carousel were taken that same day and never used in the final ad.

I also remember him carrying a small 15 HP kicker inside the console. Back then, if you ran that far offshore in a single outboard, you had to be ready to get yourself home. If something failed, that kicker came out and got you back.

No assumption of rescue.

That’s what made it so different. Very few people were pushing that far offshore in outboards at the time because the tech just wasn’t what it is today.

And this ad also reflects something I love about that era:

No followers. No reels. No engagement numbers.

A fisherman became known because other fishermen knew his name.

Reputation was built at weigh-ins, marinas, tackle shops, and through word of mouth between captains. Companies like Mariner weren’t buying reach—they were borrowing credibility.

Ralph’s reputation came from what he could actually do on the water.

Long before anyone could “follow” him online, fishermen already knew exactly who he was.

Back in the day, guys like Ralph Delph didn’t ask, “What’s the sensible way to catch this fish?”

They asked, “Do you think it can be done?”

Then they went and tried it.

These photos tell the story of a 319 pound Jewfish, what we now call a Goliath grouper, caught by Ralph on January 13, 1968 during Miami Sportfishing Club competition.

Ralph was one of the founders of the Miami Sportfishing Club in 1965, and from the beginning the club became a place where serious anglers pushed the limits of what could be done on light tackle.

For this fish, Ralph was using a plug rod with only 12 pound test.

But that wasn’t even the craziest part.

Look closely at the other slides.

Ralph climbed on top of a channel marker to fight these giant groupers.

Why?

Because when a big grouper was hooked around the marker, it would immediately try to bury itself in the structure, running between and around the pilings.

From the boat, 12 pound line wouldn’t last long.

From the top of the marker, Ralph could follow the fish, literally passing the rod around the pilings and from one side of the structure to the other as the fish tried everything it could to break him off.

Below him was his best friend Joe Robinson in a little tiller steering johnboat.

In one photo, Joe is down in the boat with one of the Jewfish they caught that day while Ralph takes the picture from the top of the marker. In another, you can actually see one of the fish in the water while Ralph is fighting it from above.

Think about that.

A tiny johnboat.

A 12 pound test plug rod.

A 319 pound grouper.

And Ralph standing on top of a channel marker trying to stay connected every time that fish made another run through the pilings.

These battles could go on for quite some time before the fish finally gave in.

The last slide is the original Miami Sportfishing Club citation documenting the catch.

Of all the crazy fish Ralph Delph caught in his life, this one might be the hardest to explain.

A swordfish.

In Florida Bay.

In the Everglades.

In just a few feet of water.

And he caught it out of a small tiller-steer skiff on a top water plug rod with a popper.

Anyone familiar with swordfish knows how ridiculous that sounds. These are open-ocean fish, and today serious swordfishermen often target them thousands of feet down.

Yet somehow, this fish had wandered all the way into the shallow backcountry near Flamingo.

Years later I asked Ralph about it because I assumed it must have been some freak accidental hookup.

Not even close.

He told me he looked over, saw the fish and simply said, “Hey, there’s a swordfish.”

He grabbed his plug rod, which had a popper/chugger with treble hooks on it, and made one cast right in front of the fish.

As soon as the lure hit the water, the swordfish hit it with its bill and ate it.

Ralph fought the fish for quite a while before finally getting it into that little skiff.

But the best part came next.

His lifelong best friend Joe Robinson was fishing nearby. Joe saw the commotion and started poling his way over.

When he got close enough to see what Ralph had somehow dragged into the boat, Joe yelled:

“RALPH! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!”

Ralph looked up, ripped off his hat, threw it onto the deck and yelled:

“DAMMIT JOE, YOU CAUGHT ME ON MY FAVORITE SWORDFISH SPOT!” 😂😂😂

That was Ralph.

Catch a swordfish where a swordfish had absolutely no business being, then act like you had been secretly catching them there your entire life.

This photograph became so iconic that it still hangs today inside Worldwide Sportsman in Islamorada.

Before fishing television, social media, GPS or a camera in everyone’s pocket, there were guys like these.

These photos came from an Everglades bass trip with Ralph Delph, Flip Pallot and Joe Robinson.

And, naturally, Ralph caught the biggest bass.

That fish became the centerpiece of this incredible full page Field & Stream advertisement for the Louis Johnson Lure Company:

“LURES THAT LAND ’EM ALL!”

Look at the tackle, the clothes and the endless Everglades behind them. This was South Florida fishing in another era, when getting to good water was part of the adventure and knowledge was earned one trip at a time.

What makes these photos so special today is knowing where these fishermen’s lives would eventually go.

Flip Pallot became one of fishing’s most recognizable storytellers. Walker’s Cay Chronicles introduced an entire generation to a different kind of outdoor television. It wasn’t simply about catching fish. It was about wild places, people, conservation and the experience of being there.

Ralph’s path went another direction.

Instead of becoming the man millions watched on television, he became the man serious fishermen traveled to fish with. His life became about technique, tackle, tournaments, records and figuring out how to consistently make extraordinary fish happen.

Two very different careers born from the same incredible South Florida fishing world.

And then there’s Joe Robinson, one of Ralph’s lifelong best friends and an exceptional angler in his own right. Ralph and Joe would go on to fish together around the world, building the kind of friendship that comes from decades of boats, fish, adventures and stories.

That’s what I love about these old photographs.

When that shutter clicked, nobody knew what these lives would eventually become.

They were just three fishermen standing in the Everglades holding bass.

Long before anyone called them legends, they were simply fishermen.

And Ralph still had to catch the biggest one. 😂🎣

WHEN YOUR CATCHES SOUND TOO IMPOSSIBLE TO BE TRUE…

There was a point in Ralph Delph’s career when people simply had a hard time believing what they were hearing.

Not because Ralph talked big. Quite the opposite.

It was because he was doing things that people had never seen done before.

Catching enormous fish on impossibly light tackle. Pushing line classes to their absolute limits. Setting records. Winning tournaments. Developing techniques that changed what serious fishermen believed was possible.

Eventually, the stories became so incredible that Miami fisherman Dale Zimmerman publicly questioned whether Ralph was “for real.”

The newspapers ran with it.

Ralph’s response?

Come fishing with me and see for yourself.

And just like that, what the newspaper called “The Credibility Fish-Off” was born.

These three articles are incredible because you can literally watch a legend being made in real time. First came the skepticism. Then the challenge. Then Zimmerman climbed aboard Ralph’s boat at Oceanside Marina to find out for himself.

Ralph didn’t need to argue about his reputation.

He was willing to put it on the water.

There was even a famous saying around Oceanside Marina: someone once bet that you could put Ralph in the marina bathroom and somehow he’d walk out with a world record.

Nobody took the bet.

That was Ralph.

World records, tournament victories and catches that sounded like fishing stories—until you realized he kept doing them over and over again.

Today we can look backward and call him a Hall of Famer.

Back then, people were watching the legend being built one impossible catch at a time.

There’s something about this photo that feels more like my father than almost any posed picture ever could.

His back is to the camera. No trophy pose. No audience. He’s just doing what he did—working a rope around another giant shark in the raw environment where he spent his life.

Ralph Delph is considered by many to be the father of modern shark fishing in the Florida Keys. He began developing his techniques in the early 1960s, when the competition wasn’t yet about world records. It was club records, the South Florida Metropolitan Tournament—the legendary “MET”—and the challenge of catching increasingly powerful fish on increasingly lighter tackle.

Eventually, the world records came.

But first came the experimentation.

Small boats. Shallow water. Light line. Big sharks. And a willingness to figure out exactly how close to the edge you could operate.

Bull sharks made that equation especially interesting. They are extraordinarily powerful, highly adaptable predators that can become extremely aggressive at close quarters—and when you’re fighting one from a 16-foot flats skiff in three feet of water, there isn’t much separation between fisherman and fish.

My father’s boats carried the scars to prove it. Shark bites in the gelcoat weren’t exactly unusual.

But the story in these slides is unusual.

Ralph wrote it himself, and it involves an approximately 250-pound bull shark, an 8-pound spinning outfit, a 16-foot skiff…and one very badly timed cavitating propeller.

Homosassa in the late 1970s was one of the great proving grounds in sport-fishing history.

During May and June, the flats were a Who’s Who of fly fishing—Lefty Kreh, Billy Pate, Al Pflueger, Carl Navarre, Stu Apte and many of the finest anglers of that generation—all pursuing the same dream: pushing the limits of what was possible with a fly rod and incredibly light tippet.

And right there among them was Ralph Delph.

That’s something I hope these stories continue to show about Ralph. He was never defined by one species, one fishery or one type of tackle.

Fly, spin, conventional, heavy tackle, light line…tarpon, permit, grouper, steelhead in British Columbia, brown trout in Montana, giant blue tuna off Cape Cod,—Ralph could do it all.

He studied fish behavior, tackle, line strength, presentation and boat handling with an almost scientific approach, then combined that knowledge with an incredible ability to execute when it mattered.

This story is a perfect example.

Ralph and his longtime friend Stu Apte encounter an absolutely enormous Homosassa tarpon. What follows involves 12-pound tippet, a long fight, Ralph going overboard with a gaff, getting dragged through the water behind a jumping tarpon—and an ending that makes the entire story worth reading.

When people see this 97-pound black grouper, they see the fish. Those who knew Capt. Ralph Delph see the science behind it.

This fish wasn’t caught by luck. It came from decades of understanding the system—from custom rods built for the perfect balance of backbone and parabolic action, to knowing how far 20-pound Andy monofilament could be pushed before failure. Every detail had a purpose.

A grouper this size’s only goal is to reach the reef. Once it gets into the rocks, the fight is usually over. Ralph mastered stopping fish like this on what he considered “heavy tackle”—just 20-pound line.

Today, giant grouper are often landed on much heavier gear. But Ralph came from a different era, when how you caught a fish mattered as much as what you caught.

If you told him about a trophy, his first question wasn’t “How big?” It was, “What did you catch it on?” For him, the challenge was always doing it on the lightest tackle possible.

That philosophy defined his career: precision over power, skill over brute force, fair chase over easy wins.

It’s one of the reasons Capt. Ralph Delph’s legacy continues to inspire anglers worldwide, and why his IGFA Hall of Fame induction is so well deserved.

Long before Instagram, YouTube, or even television fishing shows, there was The Met and the Miami herald.

The South Florida Metropolitan Fishing Tournament wasn’t just another tournament, it was the largest and one of the most prestigious year-long sport fishing tournaments in the world. Every season, the best anglers in South Florida competed for titles that carried enormous respect. Week after week, everyone waited for the latest edition of The Miami Herald to see who had climbed the leaderboard, who had broken records, and who was leading the race for the coveted Master Angler and Grand Master Angler titles.

In many ways, this era helped define modern sport fishing. The S Florida fishing clubs, The Met, and the pioneers who competed in them established many of the ethics, techniques, and competitive standards that would influence generations of anglers. Legends such as Lefty Kreh, Flip Pallot, and countless other iconic names all emerged from this incredibly competitive scene.

But one name consistently rose above the rest “Ralph Delph”.

By the time this newspaper article was published announcing that Ralph had officially become a professional guide, he wasn’t an unknown trying to make a name for himself. He had already earned that reputation. A two-time Master Angler Champion, respected throughout South Florida, and widely recognized as one of the finest light-tackle fishermen of his generation, he had already proven himself against the very best.

Once he began guiding, something remarkable happened. Many of the anglers competing for the very titles Ralph had been winning were now hiring him to put them on championship fish. At times, several of the top contenders in the standings were all fishing from Ralph’s boat. Those who lived through that era understood exactly what that meant.

Today, many offshore boats cost well over $1 million and are equipped with every technological advantage imaginable. Ralph was guiding from a 16-foot Challenger powered by a single 50-horsepower outboard, trailering it wherever the fishing was best, and consistently catching fish that most anglers today can only dream about.

🏆 THE DELPHFISHING HALL OF FAME GIVEAWAY IS HERE!

This month is incredibly special for our family as we celebrate my father, Capt. Ralph Delph, and his induction into the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame.
